Walking Through the Tanach: A Journey Through the Biblical Shephela

The Biblical Shephela is more than just a beautiful landscape of rolling hills and fertile valleys—it is the very setting where some of the most pivotal moments of the Tanach took place. As we step into this region, we’re not just exploring ancient ruins; we are walking through the pages of Jewish history, where the stories of our ancestors come to life before our eyes.

Where the Biblical World Unfolds

Our journey begins at the Biblical Museum of Natural History, a unique experience that offers an immersive introduction to the wildlife and nature of the Torah. Here, we’ll gain insights into the animals, plants, and landscapes that played an essential role in Biblical narratives, setting the stage for the incredible sites we’ll visit next.

From there, we make our way to Tel Azekah, the very place where the young shepherd David faced the mighty warrior Goliath in one of the most famous battles in history. Standing atop the tel, overlooking the Elah Valley, we’ll read from Shmuel Aleph 17, imagining the moment when David’s faith and courage changed the destiny of the Jewish people. Looking out over the battlefield, we can almost hear the clash of weapons and the triumphant echo of David’s sling as he declared, “For the battle is the Lord’s!”

Uncovering the Past, One Layer at a Time

At Beit Shemesh, we connect with the stories of the Ark of the Covenant, which was returned by the Philistines, and discuss the Samson narratives that took place in this very area. Then, at Beit Guvrin, an ancient city filled with underground caves and tunnels, we’ll witness history beneath our feet. But we won’t just learn about it—we’ll dig into it!

Our experience at Dig for a Day gives us the rare opportunity to participate in a real archaeological excavation. As we sift through layers of ancient earth, who knows what treasures we might uncover? A shard of pottery, an old coin, a piece of history waiting to be revealed—it’s an unforgettable way to literally place our hands into the past.

The Battle for Lachish: A Last Stand of Judean Strength

If time permits, we may also visit Tel Lachish, the site of a dramatic battle recorded in both the Tanach and Assyrian records. As one of the last strongholds of Judea before the destruction of the First Temple, Lachish’s story is one of resilience, faith, and the struggle for survival. The famous Lachish reliefs—now in the British Museum—depict the very battle that took place here, offering us a rare opportunity to stand where history was made.

Bringing Tanach to Life

This journey through the Shephela is not just about seeing sites—it’s about experiencing them. It’s about feeling the weight of history beneath your feet, hearing the echoes of past battles, and connecting with the unwavering faith of our ancestors. The Tanach isn’t a distant story—it’s our story. And in the Shephela, that story comes alive.

Our experience with Orly Wahba as our tour guide in Israel was nothing short of exceptional. During our friends' Bar Mitzvah trip, we had the pleasure of spending a few days with Orly on our own—and she curated the perfect outings for our family. Her deep knowledge, passion for Israel, and thoughtful attention to detail made every moment meaningful and memorable. What truly stood out was how she connected with our three daughters. Orly engaged them in a way that was both fun and educational, building genuine bonds that have lasted well beyond the trip itself. We are so grateful for her warmth, care, and insight—and we’re already looking forward to many more adventures with her as we celebrate our own daughters' Bat Mitzvahs in the years to come.
