The Hermon
Har Hermon: The Mountain of Legacy and Strength
Towering above the northernmost tip of Israel, Har Hermon stands as a majestic guardian over the land, its snow-capped peaks visible from miles away. Often called the “Eyes of the Nation,” the Hermon is not only a breathtaking natural wonder but also a place rich in Jewish history, biblical significance, and modern-day heroism.
In the Tanach, the Hermon is mentioned as a place of holiness and divine presence. Some scholars associate it with the northern boundary of the biblical Land of Israel. In Tehillim 133, King David poetically describes unity among the Jewish people as “like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion.” This imagery reminds us that just as the Hermon nourishes the land, unity nourishes the soul of Am Yisrael.
But the Hermon’s story isn’t just biblical—it played a critical role in modern Israeli history. During the Yom Kippur War in 1973, fierce battles raged on its slopes as Israeli forces fought to reclaim the mountain from Syrian control. The soldiers who fought here understood that holding the Hermon was crucial for protecting the country. Today, visiting the mountain isn’t just about skiing in Israel’s only ski resort or hiking its breathtaking trails; it’s about standing where history unfolded and appreciating the sacrifice made to secure this strategic high ground.
For those seeking adventure, the Hermon offers year-round activities. In winter, it transforms into a snowy paradise for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding, while in summer, it becomes a hiker’s dream, with trails revealing hidden waterfalls, alpine landscapes, and panoramic views stretching across Israel, Lebanon, and Syria.
A visit to the Hermon is more than just a trip to a scenic mountain—it’s a journey through history, faith, and resilience. Whether you come to enjoy the natural beauty or to reflect on the sacrifices made to protect this land, standing atop the highest peak in Israel is an experience that leaves you in awe.
